Tips for an Incoming UP Diliman Freshman

Who would've thought that it's been a FULL YEAR since I started my journey (lol, how dramatic) as a University of the Philippines freshman? :D

I recall being scared as hell going into college. All my (school-)life I've protected within the fences (haha) of MC; less than a kilometer away was the Unibersidad ng Pilipinas, where I was almost sure of getting mugged or raped. HAHA I swear, I even cried about this (Okay, too much info).

ANYWAY, you can imagine how scared I was. That led to hours of searching the internet for anything that could help me as I entered college. Tips for freshmen, the list of General Electives, the preenlistment procedure, the UP map (complete with jeepney routes).

SO, as my contribution to humanity (especially to Econ freshmen, WOOHOO) -- and because I was feeling reflect-y when I wrote this on my journal -- here are some "tips" (for a lack of a better word) for an incoming UP Diliman freshman:

*Note: These things aren't usually what you will read on forums or whatever. These are the stuff I have learned or observed in my first year in UP.

1) They will call you FRESHIES hahaha. Get used to it. Or don't, in my case. (Notice how I haven't used that word)

2) UP will not be everything you've hoped/expected/been scared of. Especially if those expectations/ideas came from someone born earlier than 1989 and who did not study in UP, lol.

3) Given that, you need to CHILL. Keep an open mind, but hold on to your values. (I cannot emphasize this enough :>)

4) You will find that the first couple of months in UP will be HELLA CHILL. Like you won't even be studying, and you'll find that you don't need to. Think again. Come hell week, you may not sleep and you will start regretting not having read your readings sooner. Yes, UP isn't all about acads (you can get into anything you want!!), but that's when you gotta keep your guard up. It teaches you a valuable lesson about keeping your priorities straight and your acads in check. Because you will be tempted to stray.

5) Going back to the Freshie thing... I suppose you've already posts that have "Don't look like a freshie" as their #1 tip. Stuff like "TBA is not The Bahay ng Alumni" or "Say AS instead of Palma Hall." DON'T WORRY. The upperclassmen won't bully you! At least not in Econ. Srsly, never walk alone? Bullshit. I guess, HAHA.

6) But anyway, just in case, it doesn't hurt to PREPARE. Do what I did -- download a map of UP (with jeepney routes) to your phone!

And because I am such an amazing person here's a copy (I already updated the Toki route ;) ):

7) Of course nothing says comfort than numbers... of friends, acquaintances. In my case, it helped A LOT that I would see an MC batch mate pretty much everywhere I went in UP (familiarity ftw <3). For those who aren't from a big school (and for those who are), I highly encourage you to make friends with your blockmates. I know you're shy, but believe me, they well may be the warmest people you will meet in UP. They may seem snobbish at first (can't help but judge), but anyone can be your friend in UP (of course, choose wisely when it comes to their values :>). Even that girl you're trying to avoid eye contact with.

8) I mentioned judging people. Another big thing I learned in UP: Don't judge. You may have gotten away with it in high school (and it might have also led to your popularity), but "judgers" are looked down upon here. You can be whoever you want to be here -- let out your true colors.

9) Lastly.. You will not get raped, you will not get mugged and jeeps are pretty safe. But you know, be careful still.

TEEHEE I'm done. :D I hope this was helpful. I can't wait to volunteer for Econ freshman orientations!!
Message me if you need anything. :) I'd rather on Tumblr though: buchinicole.tumblr.com (I don't really use this blog anymore) LOL

Edit in, May 30, 2013: I won't be using this blog anymore, so if you have any questions/want to get in touch with me, you can do so through my Tumblr. Peace out!

  2. Great tips! I think it'll be so helpful.
Pwede magtanong? I just want to ask kung ano ang mga gamit na kailangan mo? Diba kasi sa high school, they're giving you like a list of requirements? Ngayon kasi wala. So baka ma-mali ang bilhin ko. Should I buy like notebooks or fillers or binders, etc. Please. Wala lang kasi akong idea. :))

  3. Hello! I'm glad you think so. :)

Hmm.. If you're talking any kind of Math, I highly suggest getting a notebook (something like a spiral notebook -- not a filler or graphical notebook).
Otherwise, I find taking notes on random pieces of paper (lol) better. Well hindi naman super random (maybe you could have a yellow pad/binder with bond paper), but you'll need something where you wouldn't mind taking messy, unorganized notes. ;) Makes you feel OC kasi when you have a proper notebook.
If you'll be taking a subject that provides you with printed PPT slides (like Geol 1 or Econ 11), it would be better to take notes there. Helps you see everything already when you study for an exam. :D

Of course, these study "habits" differ from person to person. ;) I hope it helps though! GOOD LUCK! :D

    1. Yup, Econ is great!! :D
If you get BS Economics (that's different from Business Economics), you'll have 10 free electives. So aside from being an Econ major, you can also minor in something else, or take whatever other classes you want. :D The curriculum gives you so much freedom to pursue whatever you take interest in, and I think that's something that isn't offered anywhere else. :D
Moreover, the School (of Econ) really takes care of its students: I didn't get cultured shock, we have soap in the girl's bathrooms, etc. The people are very warm and encouraging, :D

    2. Ohh, that's nice to know hahaha! What's the difference between BS Business Economics and BS Economics :o

And what made you choose UP for Economics, and why not other universities? :))

    3. (btw i researched the diff between Business Economics and Economics and even compared their curriculum in the UP website. Parang walang difference..)

    4. (I'm taking Business Economics (BE) btw) Weell, the difference is that when you're BE, you're kind of minoring in Business Administration (BA). Instead of having the 10 free electives that Econ has, BE only has 5 free electives (then they're required to take some BA and/or Industrial Engineering classes).

I got into Management Engineering (ME) of Ateneo, actually. :)) Didn't apply for UST and DLSU. I picked UP because I felt that it had more to offer.
Curriculum-wise, I had SO much more freedom, and my units weren't "wasted" on subjects like Theology. BE seemed like such a well-rounded course, compared to ADMU's Math-heavy ME. To be honest, I was scared of ME. I felt that if I pursued that course, I would end up shifting to Management, which is a lot less prestigious compared to UP's BE.
University-wise, UP was different from what I was used to (I felt that in Ateneo, it would be the same crowd as in high school) -- I needed to be exposed to the "outside world," as they'd say. I felt that Ateneo would be the safe choice and UP would be a risk worth taking.

  5. I'm from La Salle Zobel in Muntinlupa , hehe :D Thanks for giving me a whole new perspective of UP life, and for all your tips @-) Especially about the course I'm interested in UP :D

It's just that I live in the Las Pinas area and going to UP in QC everyday will be...hassle -___- :(

    1. You don't plan on staying in a dorm or something? In that case, what other universities are you considering? :)

And no problem, it was my pleasure! :) Hey, good luck on the UPCAT! It isn't as bad as you'd think it is. ;)

    2. Not really planning on dorm-ing, haha! I'm also considering Ateneo (...still far from my house...) and DLSU :)

I'm quite nervous for UPCAT =)) Did you go to a review center or anything? Or you just self-studied?

    3. I went to a review center, yeah. I think the most that can do is to make you feel prepared. I mean you don't really learn anything you don't already know, but it saves you from that feeling of uncertainty that you get by not going to a review center.

    1. My pleasure! :)
My first campus choice was Diliman, with BS Business Economics and BS Sociology (admittedly, I picked Sociology just to get into Diliman). My second campus choice was Los Banos with (if I'm not mistaken) BS Industrial Engineering and BS Agricultural Economics :)

  9. If you did not pass the UPCAT exams, can you still go to UP, But you know not as a scholar? Or you really can't go here if you didn't pass UPCAT?
